these guys know how to fish …

The duo of Horn and Miller are currently in 6th place in the West Division Angler Team of the Year with a total of 1300 points. A team from Aledo High School is in first place with 1438 points.

Last October Miller and Horn won a THSBA area tournament held at Eagle Mountain Lake. Horn caught the largest fish of the tournament weighting in at 6.91 lbs. The pair went on to catch four bass with a combined weight of 15.32 pounds and that is a lot of fish. In that tournament they won an $830 scholarship, a $297 gift certificate and a rod and reel combo valued at $180.00.

overall KHS teams are ranked #14 in region …

Kennedale actually has three bass teams. The other two teams for Kennedale are Cody Bossaller/Jacob Warren and Ethan Bishop/John Bell. As a combined team, Kennedale is ranked 14th overall in the THSBA Western Division.

There are four high school division in the THSBA based on locale and not size. Kennedale is in the Western Division. Each school is allowed to enter three different teams for scoring purposes although the schools may have more teams. Individual ?angler teams? are composed of two anglers and a boat captain. Scores are kept for each angler team and are also combined for the Team of the Year rankings.

not passing, not fishing …

High School Biology and Outdoor Education teacher, Danny Wilcox, is the sponsor. He sends in the entry forms and verifies that each student has passing grades, otherwise no lines in the water. This year he was able to use money from the Willow Bend Hunt Club in Plano, donated for the outdoor education program, to pay the entry fees ($50.00 per team).

Students are responsible for gas to and from the lake, as well as their own boat gas. But, there is something to fish for in the state tournament other than the great story about the one that got away, $20,000 worth of scholarship money for the winners.

favorite places to fish …

Both Horn and Miller have been fishing for a while. Miller said he started fishing when he was 3 years old but didn?t get serious about it until this year. His favorite places to fish are Lake Arlington and Joe Pool Lake but still does a lot of pond fishing.

Horn said that he started fishing about 6 but got into serious fishing when he around 11. His most favorite place to fish is Green River in western Wyoming. ?The trout and whitefish are so healthy and the Tetons in the background ??. But locally, he likes Joe Pool Lake because as he says, ?There are so many different ways to fish there.?

what works ?

Determination says Horn. ?You can fish at a high level if you do your research, try different things and keep grinding?? Miller calls it perservance. ?It also takes quick thinking, identifying what the fish are eating and the bait they want.?

plans after high school ?

Horn wants to continue fishing as a professional. ?Those guys in the BASS and FLW make a lot of money for doing the thing they love.? He would also settle for a job with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department saying that ?would make me very happy.? Miller has plans of going to college and law school and to buy a boat, just not sure in what order.
