Property Tax Refund? Maybe an early Christmas gift

According to Ron Wright, Tarrant County Tax Assessor, there may be up to 12 million dollars in refunds available. In a letter sent out this past week, Wright said that there was apparently up to 5,000 refunds due to taxpayers.

 

Actually refunds are not that unusual as exemptions and protests are process during the year. What is different is the sheer numbers.

What is the reason?

County officials blame software used by the Tarrant County Appraisal District, citing earlier criticism of the software by state officials. Not so fast says TAD Chief Appraiser Jeff Law. In a letter mentioned in the Star Telegram, he cited a significant increase in exemptions claims and protests.

?We handle these types of changes, which may cause either a refund or supplemental tax bills, all throughout the year and have done so for years,? he said in a written statement. ?The only difference is the timing of the refunds this year as compared to other years.

?The volume of 2016 exemption applications this year, were higher, than in previous years. In addition, the volume of protest before the appraisal review board, were higher this year, as well.?

TAD tabulates appraises property values throughout Tarrant County and tabulates the amounts due to the various taxing districts including cities, schools, junior college, hospital and county.

How do you know if you are owed?

 

Anyone who wants to know if they are due a refund can call the Tax Assessor-Collector’s office at 817-884-1100 and workers can look up whether that property owner is owed a refund. Or, officials said, taxpayers can wait to see if they get a refund in the mail.
