Aerial game falls short for Rider as Cats win 62-26

the take on Rider game and team success so far …

Last Friday night?s game between 5A Wichita Falls Rider High School and 4A Kennedale High School (3-0) was a game of ?we will take what you give us.? {{more: continue … }}

In the beginning, it was both sides feeling a little generous. For Rider, it was the gift of the run. Kennedale gladly took what was offered and ran. Fifty-four carries, 537 yards and 9 touch downs later #6 Kennedale had worn out their welcome in Wichita Falls.

However, Kennedale

was a little generous in allowing the pass at least in the beginning. Rider

finished the night for a grand total of 337 yards going 19-30 with no

interceptions. That is a huge number but in the end it equaled out to just 3

TDs by air and 1 by ground leaving Kennedale a 5 TD advantaged.

Rider runs a spread offense and adds a quick count to keep opposing teams off balance. In the two games leading up to the match up with Kennedale, the Rider Raiders had amassed 916 yards in total offense with 565 of that through the air. This gave them a two game average of 485 yards per game.

The Cats defense, while sorely tested, was able to knock 150 yards off that average and completely shut down any rushing game the Raiders hoped to have. The Raiders managed only 27 yards on the ground on 26 tries. Note: In none of the three games that Kennedale has played this season has a team broke 100 yards on the ground. This meant for the Raiders, the only game was the passing game.

Kennedale is not often tested by air like this and the coaches are glad it came early. As one coach said ?We found some weaknesses. We were able to make some adjustments that helped but we know now what we have to do.?

The adjustments worked for the Wildcats because in the second half of the game, Rider managed only 2 first downs and 98 yards.

How is Kennedale doing so far?

It is not fair to compare teams from year to year because the players are different and so are the teams that they play, maybe not in name but in make-up. Having said that, this is how it looks this year. The following are the stats for the first three games of this year and last year – against the same opponents.

Hint: Kennedale has shown improvement in all categories

Record:

  • 2017- 3-0
  • 2016 2-1

  • 2016 ? Terrell 8/73 yds, Avarado 8/56, Rider 9-92 = 25/221 yds
Summary: Cats are winning more, scoring more, and are allowing fewer points. Tackles are up and opponents are coughing up the ball more. The kicking game is purring. Flags are flying less and Kennedale is actually passing [a little] more.

What?s not to like this early in the season especially as Kennedale enters into the meat of their regular season (Whitehouse 3-1 and #2 West Orange Stark 2-0).
