Kennedale Football Head Coach Richard Barrett earned Coach of the Year honors from Inside HS Sports DFW last Saturday on the sports show that aired at 6:30 on Channel Five.? Along with the honor, he received his own bobblehead. {{more: continue …}}

Coach Barrett, who is completing his 40th year as a coach, led the Kennedale Wildcats this year to their first championship title game in school history. The Wildcats ended up 14-2 and as state runner ups for Class 4A Division 1 ball.

It has also been a special year for Barrett in another way, he reached 200 career wins this season three games deep into the playoffs. With the finish this year, he now has 202 career wins versus 74 losses and 1 tie.

Barrett started teaching and coaching as an assistant at Everman in 1979 until 1981 when he moved to Kennedale under head coach Dan Yokeley. He remained with Kennedale until 1991 when he left with Yokeley to return to Everman. Five years later Barrett left Everman to take his first head coaching job at Godley ISD in 1995. He came back to Kennedale in 2001 as head coach and athletic director.

The last four years have also been the best consecutive years for Kennedale and Barrett. The Wildcats have had back to back undefeated season, including 4 straight undisputed district titles and the last two years the Cats took it to new heights with a state semifinal finish last year and then this year?s title game.

Inside HS Sports DFW airs weekly on Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. and features local DFW high school sports stories and highlights. Two years ago, the show

honored Quardraiz Wadley as the Unsung Player of the Year. He was accompanied

by Coach Barrett. Wadley also received

his own bobblehead.
