Kennedale did what was expected of a #1 seed team in bi-district play last week by defeating Dallas Wilmer-Hutchins 62-20. (Occasionally a real surprise happens went a top team is taken down i.e. #1 seed Van and undefeated losing to #4 seed Paris 30-23).

For the Wilmer game, Kennedale rolled up 562 yards to 260. Juwan Washington had a super night rushing for 320 yards at 9.70 yards a clip and 7 touchdowns. Ronald Hayes stacked up 196 yards at an average of 9.80 on 20 carries and 1 touchdown.

The Maxpreps players of the game were Juwan Washington for Overall Player of the Game, Ronald Hayes as Offensive Player and Chris Rhinehardt as Defensive Player (6 tackles, 1 sacks, 1 pass break up and 4 QBDs).

Now it is time for serious ball …

The true playoff season starts tonight against a solid Athens team.

The Athens Hornets are 8-3 and were 4-1 in district play. In the last THSCA Coaches Poll, Athens was at #6 in Class 4A Division 1 Area II. Kennedale was #2 behind 1# Argyle.

Almost to the man, the KHS coaches have said that this team is the mirror of the Kennedale Wildcat team. Like Kennedale, it is one that runs the ?wing-t? offense.

Both teams feature a premier running back with a second back capable of putting up big numbers.

Suffice to say that this will be game where a ball seldom flies through the air. It will be smash mouth ball, ?if we can?t run over, we will run through you.?

Athens averages 42 points per game while allowing 22. Kennedale is averaging 55 points per game and allowing just 11.

The Hornets have won 5 straight ….

Athens had 3 losses this year. The Hornets opened the season with a loss to 4A Henderson (9-2) 36-20 and later lost to 5A Hallsville (6-4) 41-21 and then 4A Van (10-1) 23-20.

The Hornets have won five straight since, including last week’s bi-district game against Pittsburg, winning that one 47-27.

Athens keeps their stats to themselves, so a side by side look is not available.
