Board extends Supt’s contract, adds academic courses and more

Last Thursday night, the KISD Board of Trustees met in regular session with all members present and took a number of actions. {{more}}
 
But first, the Board was honored with gifts of flowers, letters, appreciation certificates and even a video thanking the board members for their contributions to the district. It was all part of School Board Recognition Month.
 
proclamations issued to All-State honorees …
All State Choir – Leanne Blind & Noah

Wyckoff

The Board in turn presented proclamations to four Texas All-State honorees from Kennedale High School. Leanne Blind (Jr) and Noah Wyckoff (So) received recognition for their selection to the 2016 All-State Choir along with praise from KHS Director of Choirs, Matt Schenck. KHS students Anna Llamas and Ileana Gamillo were recognized with proclamations for their selection to the Association of Texas Small School Bands 2016 Texas All State Band, helping to give the proclamation with words of praise was Erol Oktay, KHS Director of Bands. All four will perform later this spring at state conferences.

Under new business, the following items were approved or given the go ahead ? the 2015-2016 District Improvement Plan; 2016-2017 Academic Handbook; a parking lot expansion at the KISD Administration Complex and the replacement of the synthetic turf at the indoor facility at Wildcat Stadium.

The District Improvement Plan had no real change while the Academic Handbook included several new courses as Kennedale ISD expands the CTE (Career and Technical Education) offerings.

Career and Technical Education
The CTE program in Kennedale has been a leader in North Texas area. These programs offer students a chance to develop a skill in an area of interest that can translate into real world knowledge with certifications and increase career opportunities.
 
Added classes for next year included classes in human resource management, computer technician, computer maintenance, concepts of engineering, sports medicine, medical microbiology and floral design.
 
The parking lot expansion involves the grassy area directly in front of the main administration building. Tarrant County work crews will do the work under an inter-local government agreement. Cost was not discussed.
 
flood damage and wear and tear …
 
The turf request came as result of flood damage to the turf along with general wear and tear. The facility is used year around by the schools and community. It has received high profile recognition from the armed forces, who have used it for a number of years as a practice facility leading up to the Armed Forces Bowl, played each year in Fort Worth. Outside groups such as the armed forces pay a rental fee for use with the money going back into the general budget.
 
One teacher was hired this past month, Sarah Osborne. She will be teaching English at the high school and will replace MiLena Balthrop who retired in January
 
enrollment up 29 students …
 
The monthly enrollment report showed the district with an increase of 29 students from the 84th day of the school year last year for an overall enrollment of 3,163 students. On that snapshot day, Delaney Elementary had an enrollment figure of 711 (decrease of 35), Patterson Elementary 471 (increase of 25), Arthur Intermediate 441 (decrease of 25). Kennedale Junior High 505 (increase of 13) and Kennedale High 1035 (increase of 51).
 
16 years and counting …

Superintendent Gary Dugger

The Board went into closed session for the annual superintendent evaluation. Emerging from the closed session, a motion was made and approved to extend the employment contract for Superintendent Gary Dugger for another year on a three year contract. Dugger, who came to Kennedale as superintendent from Godley in 2001, has become one of the longest serving superintendents of Kennedale ISD with 16 years in the top job.
