Business improves as local cities see upswing in sale taxes income

Kennedale, Forrest Hill, Everman, Alvarado and Mansfield are among the local cities that have benefited from the improving economy, according to figures released last week by the Texas State Comptroller Susan Combs. {{more}}
 
This report includes the amounts paid to cities in August plus totals paid from January through August. The August sales tax figures represent monthly sales made and collected in June, counted in July and distributed this month.
 
For the State of Texas sales tax net collections deposited to general revenue totaled $2,335.9 million in July 2014. Compared with the $2,197.0 million last year, this represents a 6.3 percent increase.
 
In August, the City of Kennedale received a payment from the State of $115,462.59, a 3.19 percent increase over the 2013 amount of $111,892.04. Kennedale has received $858,732.91 from January to date representing a healthy 10.2 increase over last year’s year to-date figures.
 
Forrest Hill saw a small increase of 0.55 percent for August with a total of $199,868. For the year the city revenue is down slightly recording a 0.36 percent decrease on a total of $1,450,311.
 
Everman receives smaller payments than its neighbors but has had a significant higher increase. In August Everman banked a check for $51,897.26 which was a 19.76% increase over August of 2013. For the year Everman sales tax revenue is up 18.91% with a total of $309,299.71 in payments received.
 
Big city neighbors showed mixed numbers. Fort Worth has decrease for August of .35 percent but a 5.76 percent increase year to-date. Arlington had a 4.25% increase for August but is down 2.51% year to-date. Mansfield jumped 8.96% in August returns and is showing a very strong 13.97% increase for the year.
 
Alvarado received a sales tax revenue allocation of $136,144, a 5.70 percent increase over August of last year but is down 0.65% for the year.
 
Burleson’s August check was for $1,313,802 down 0.38% over last year. However, to-date Burleson has collected 6.66% more in sales tax revenue for a total of $10061,639.
 
Crowley showed a smaller increase of 1.42 percent, putting in the city’s coffers $199,956.49 in sales tax revenues. But payments to the city since January have shown a 3.96 percent increase to date.

?Sales tax revenues continue to grow at a moderate pace,? Combs said. ?The increase was led by remittances from the wholesale trade, services and restaurant sectors.
 
The increase in sale tax revenue is good news for Kennedale. City leaders have been working to improve the business climate in Kennedale and to encourage business development especially at the entrance to the city from I-20.
 
QT helped to replace the sales tax revenue lost when the adult oriented business were forced out of the the city several years ago. New businesses are now moving into the area including Popeyes, Burger King and a new medical clinic.
