Fire at landfill burns itself out

The Fort Worth Fire Department reported a fire at a landfill off of Dick Price Road early on Tuesday morning. Flames from the fire continued for more that 6 hours. {{more:Read more …}}
 
Firecrews including Kennedale responded to the fire that was first reported just before 12:30 a.m. along Salt Road near Kennedale Parkway. Fire officials reported it as a large mulch pile which caught on fire, including unprocessed grass clippings and leaves.
 
The area that was ablaze was also surrounded by processed mulch and wood pallets. According to the Fort Worth Fire Department, the area measured 300 feet long, 50 feet wide and 20 feet high in the tallest places.
 

Kennedale firefighters were cleared to go when the fire was found to be in the Fort Worth city limits.

Due to its location, it was not easy for emergency crews to get water to the fire. So, since the flames were contained to one area of the landfill, workers decided to simply let the grass and leaves burn out.
 

Salt Road is off of I-20 in Forest Hill but the Fort Worth landfill backs up to Dick Price Road.

 
Brush fire trucks were called in to isolate the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other debris piles.
 

It burned for more than six hours throughout the early morning hours, people reported smelling smoke more than 10 miles away from the area.

 
There has been no word as to what caused the fire, and no injuries were reported.
