KHS Lady Kats start Whataburger Tournament this week

The Kennedale Lady Kat and Wildcat basketball teams enter the annual Whataburger tournament this week starting Thursday, December 28. {{more: continue …}}

The #10 state ranked Kennedale Lady Kats, who are the defending Whataburger champions, are 3-0 in district play and 10-12 overall.

The Lady Kats have wins over Maypearl (57-37), Christoval (42-35), Nolan Catholic (68-65), North Forney (54-44), Denton (55-49) and Greewood (65-57). In district play the Kats have defeated Mineral Wells (88-79 with an 18-6 run to end the game), Benbrook (70-51), Springtown (63-26). Next week they will return to district play against Castleberry on Tuesday, December 2 at Castleberry.

In winning the tournament last year, the Lady Kats upset the 4A state champion, Liberty Hill 66-43. Liberty Hill went on to win their 4th state title in the UIL championship in March.

The Whataburger Girls Blue Division returns several top teams from last year along with new teams which includes 4A #1 Liberty Hill, #3 Argyle , #10 Kennedale, #14 Stephenville and #22 Abilene Wylie. Teams from 3A include #2 Wall, #8 Little River Academy, #10 Bowie and #11 Jim Ned. Others include the 2016 2A State Champions ranked preseason #1 Panhandle; the 2016 1A State Champions and presason ranked #2 Nazareth along with TAPPS 2016 defending 5A Champions also ranked #1 Dallas Christian. This is a who’s of Texas small school girls’s basketball. Other teams in the field include Bridgeport, Liberty Christian, Seminole and Ponder.
