For three decades, UC has invited entering freshmen or first-years to nominate an educator who has changed them, challenged them, or helped them along the path toward intellectual growth.
 
Every year, the University of Chicago receives letters from hundreds of admitted students, inspired by teachers who have literally changed the course of their lives, taught them to re-imagine texts, to delve deeper into problem solving and to think beyond the borders of the classroom in the pursuit of their own education.

In recognition of their profound influence, the Office of College Admissions grants the Outstanding Educator Award to teachers who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the education and mentorship of their students. True learning is a collaborative experience that requires patience, selflessness, and passion.
 
Matuni has worked for Kennedale ISD for 10 years. His wife, Shannon, is in her 7th year with the school district (11 years teaching). They have two children.

Last year there were only 10 recipients for this honor from around the country.
