The KISD Board of Trustee last month agreed to several changes that will be effect this year for student health and wellness. These changes came from the KISD Student Health and Advisory Committee. {{more}}
 
The Committee met in July and voted on three items that KISD Director of Food Services, Laurie Humiston, brought to the committee. The recommendations were due to recent federal/state regulations. The following recommendations were approved unanimously by the committee and the KISD Board of Trustees.
 
  1. Diet sodas will not be sold to students at the secondary level through vending machines or any form of sale during the school day, even though diet sodas are now considered a smart snack.
  2. Campuses will be allowed 3 exempt days to allow parents or campus staff to serve food or drink that are otherwise not permitted according to the USDA through the National School Lunch Program.
  3. The schools and booster clubs will have unlimited number of exempt days where they will be allowed to sell food and beverages in the concession stands when UIL events are being held in district during the school day, as this raises funds to support that particular sport or program.
