Local resident hits century mark today

Mayor Brian Johnson and Mayor Pro Tem Jan Joplin presented a proclamation to Mrs. Hulce at Monday night’s city council meeting this week declaring today as Lorretta Hulce Day in Kennedale.
 
She had a celebration yesterday at Pecan Manor with the staff and residents. Jan Joplin also was there representing the City.

Lorretta Elaine Thompson was born on July 22, 1917 in Westlake, Wisconsin to Ben and Evelyn Thompson. She was the third child of six siblings.
 

She married Harold Hulce at the age of 20. They had two sons, Harold in 1939 and Michael in 1941.

 
During WWII, they lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she worked in a defense plant while her husband served in the U.S. Army.
 
After the war, the moved to Parker County, Texas in 1946. Harold helped an Army buddy run his ranch and the family farmed and worked the dairy until the drought during the 1950?s.
 
Mrs. Parker became the housekeeper for the priest at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Weatherford and worked there for many years.
 
She loved gardening and kept it up into her 80?s. She drove herself around until she was 95 when she voluntarily quit driving.
 
The Hulce family increased with the birth of four grandchildren and later six great-grandchildren.
 
She and her husband lived together just shy of 63 years until his passing in 2001.
 
Mrs. Hulce has been a resident of Pecan Manor since 2012.
