Magic at the Star

Barrett works a little magic for 200 career win …

I don?t know if Head Coach/Athletic Director Richard Barrett even knows who are what a Harry Potter is, but Barrett cast one huge Hogswart spell on the last 33 seconds of the regional semifinals Friday night in Frisco. {{more: continue …}}

In a game that literally was going to be the last team with the football wins, the folks of Midlothian Heritage were dancing in the aisle after their team had just scored with 33 seconds left in the game to bring the score to 42-41 in the Wildcats favor. Heritage put it all on the table, rolled the dice and went for the two on a pass and made it. (Actually a safe bet as Heritage’s Ledbetter finished the night with 30 completions for 5 touchdown and 435 yards)

Heritage was ahead for the first time all night at 43-42. As far as they were concern, the game was over.

not built for a comeback with so little time …

Kennedale was a running team that could drive the field in 4 or 5 plays and score and had done so consistently all night to keep one step ahead of the high flying aerial act of Heritage. The nods around the press room were in agreement, Kennedale was not built to make a comeback in this kind of situation. (Kennedale rolled up 360 yards on the ground for the game).

On the far sideline, Coach Barrett was pacing the sidelines with headphones and trademark clipboard in hand seemingly unperturbed. He was far from finished, after gathering the team around to spread a little of his spell, the Cats were sent back on the field ready to do or die as the old saying goes.

time for the cats to change their skin …

The Cats were starting from their own 29 yard line, 71 yards from their goal. DJ Kirven (Sr) picked up 5 yards – 28 seconds left. Time out, the Cats needed a stronger potion. Kennedale had to pick up some major yardage and it came in un-Kennedale way ? a halfback pass.

On the next play, QB Evan Jowers (Jr) handed off to Kirven who headed for the sidelines pulled up and threw for the stars and somewhere down the field Jaden Smith (Jr) hauled in the football in a leaping catch, with a Midlothian Heritage defender latched on his back. Kennedale was at the Heritage 23 yard line with 17 seconds left in the game. see pass

Barrett decided to go for a field goal, this would be a 40 yard attempt by Kevin Tiero (Sr). This was not so much magic as Tiero is 6 for 6 this year with his longest being 43 yards. Heritage tried to ice Tiero with back to back timeouts. He was not phased and kicked a line drive that splits the goal posts with 12 seconds left to play. see kick

still time left on the clock …

Twelve seconds in this type of game is 12 seconds to long. But, Barrett was not finished with his bag of spells, he called for an onside kick and a Kennedale player magically came up with it.

Last team with the ball wins! Kennedale lives to play another day, 45-43.

For the game the two teams combined for 952 yards of offense. Heritage had 495 yards with all but 60 through the air and Kennedale had 98 by air and 360 on the ground.
