The backstory

For the most part the real playoffs start this week. First round pits #1 seeds against #4 seeds in half of the games and it is almost always a wipeout, witness Kennedale vs Wilmer Hutchins 63-0 last week. {{more:Read more…}}

Second round action is much more competitive with one of the top couple teams from one district facing off against a top team from another. This week Kennedale plays Terrell at DeSoto High School at 7:30 p.m. Directions

three way tie in district play …

Terrell (9-2) is from District 8-4A which ended in a three way tie for 1st in the district at 5-1 between Terrell, Van (10-1) and Kaufman (9-2).

Terrell?s two losses came to Kennedale (21-20) on September 2 (read game story) and Kaufman (31-21) on September 23. The Tigers are coming off a 42-13 win over North Lamar (5-6, 2-3) last week in bi-district play.

coming off a 11-2 season in 5A …

Last year, Terrell finished 11-2, winning the district with a 7-0 record while playing in Class 5A, going three deep in the playoffs before losing out to Lancaster 40-21.

This year with Terrell dropping back to 4A, the Tigers returned 21 players with 5 starters on offense and 6 on defense. They have effective weapons in senior running back Elijah McQueen (1297 yds on 176 carries, 7.4avg, 19 TDs) and senior defensive back turned quarterback Tiyea Zanders (665 yds on 107 carries, 6.2 avg, 12 TDs). Throw in Zanders?s 1010 passing yards and you have a game. The scrambling quarterback has thrown 6 interceptions this season.

Terrell Head Coach Mike Shields is in his 15th year as head coach. This is his third year at Terrell after coaching at Red Oak for seven years and Italy prior.

Cats with effective 3 prong attack …
The Cats offense has racked

up 4,449 yards and 55 TDs this season Photo: Staci Otts

Kennedale has had to replace an explosive running game from the 2015 Cats. But after dealing with some early season injuries and stumbles, the Cats have developed an effective three prong attack similar to past years. While the Cats still don?t pass much, QB Evan Jowers (So) has 545 rushing yards on 52 carries for a 10.5 avg and 8 TDS to add to his 312 yards of passing for 6 TDs with 1 interception. But it is Kennedale?s running back combo that has proved deadly for most teams with DJ Kirven (So) rushing for 1374 yards on 170 carries at a 8.1 avg and 15 TDs and Jaden Knowles (Jr) adding another 1160 on 154 carries and 10 TDs.

five shutouts this season …

Expect to see a game similar to the first match-up this year between the two teams with Terrell pulling off the big plays and Kennedale dominating on the ground. It will be up to the Wildcat defense to stop the flash and dash to keep this game in the win column for the Cats. The defense has proved more than capable with 5 shutouts this season and allowing an average of just 11.9 points per game.

The winner of this game will face the winner of the Midlothian Heritage (10-1) vs Kaufman (8-3) game.
