Two teams attended the event with Brenna Crabtree and Nevyn Johnson bringing home awards for Best Essay and Best Overall Entry. Also representing Patterson were Bayli Barnes and Allison Ramirez. Jairdan Polk and River Rodriguez contributed to the projects, but were not able to attend the contest.

The competition was the final step in a project that began in October, when the students were challenged to develop a solution to the problem of how to feed the citizens of future cities. The students had to choose a crop and develop a futuristic farming system.

First, they learned about nutritional needs and possible food sources with the help of guest speaker, Dakota Greenfield-Dunn, a nutrition major from the University of Texas. Next, they researched current urban farming methods, such as vertical gardening, aquaponics, and hydroponics. Using their new knowledge, the students imagined solutions and wrote an essay explaining their solution to the problem.

After submitting their essay, the teams went to work building a model of their farming method and city while using mostly recyclable materials. Their model had to include at least one moving part, as well as the typical infrastructure and buildings found in cities.

At the competition, the teams shared their ideas with engineers/judges in an informal question/answer sessions.

Mrs. Greenfield, teacher and sponsor, said that ?both teams worked hard throughout the project and produced outstanding results. She added, that the students who attended the competition, ?did a fantastic job representing Patterson and KISD. Their knowledge, innovative ideas, and confidence earned them praise from the judges and others attending the competition. We are very proud of these students for showing their grit and achieving great success!?
