Patterson Elementary students Alena Gargus, Nathan Hackler, Tyler Heutzenroeder and Rachel Omorogbe were awarded Best Overall Entry for their essay and futuristic city model. The competition was the final step in a project that began in October, when the students were challenged to develop a solution to the problem of providing public spaces for a city of the future.

Throughout the project, the students followed the Engineering Design Process.
  • They began with researching historic, current and cutting-edge methods of designing and building effective public spaces.
  • Using their new knowledge, the students imagined solutions and wrote an essay explaining their solution to the problem.
  • After submitting their essay, the team went to work building a model of their city and its innovative public spaces while using mostly recycled materials.
  • At the competition, the students shared their ideas with engineers/judges in question/answer sessions.
The students worked hard throughout the project, produced outstanding results and represented the best of Patterson and KISD. Their innovative ideas, collaboration and confidence earned them praise from the judges and others attending the competition.

Patterson Elementary is very proud of these students for showing their grit and achieving great success!
