On Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, a pilot recycling program will begin in the Kennedale neighborhood of Steeplechase.

It will last 3 months and then the City of Kennedale will evaluate it for possible expansion to the rest of the city. The deciding factor will be how many will make the effort to recycle. {{more}}

By now all the residents in the Steeplechase edition have received their big blue recycling cart to be used for recyclable items only (which for most will be at least 70% of their trash). The City is hopeful that Big Blue will be sitting out on the curb alongside the regular trash carts on Wednesday.

Regular trash collection will continue on the same 2-day a week schedule as before. (On Wednesday there will be two separate trucks picking up trash items and it may not be at the same time).

The collection of recyclables in Big Blue will be once a week on Wednesday only.

The program chosen is simple. It requires only one decision. Is this item recyclable? If it is, it will go into Big Blue, if not it goes in your regular trash container. Items that are recyclable are not bagged but just put in the blue container.

If a resident decides not to recycle, they should not use Big Blue for your trash. The trash may not be picked on the regular trash run or the recycling run.

The following are recyclable items
  • almost all glass including beer and wine bottles (clear, green or amber color)
  • metal – tin and aluminum cans including spray cans, soda and beer cans and metal lids
  • paper items including circulars, newspapers, cereal/food boxes and most cardboard
  • plastics (#1,#5 & #7) such as water and soda bottles, milk jugs, soap empty medicine bottles and cleaning bottles, storage containers, eating utensils but not plastic grocery bags – all plastics are marked with a recycling number.
All should be empty and cleared of food, liquid, and other medicine.

The items that are not recyclable in this program include
  • food waste,
  • styrofoam,
  • wood and construction waste,
  • restroom waste (including diapers),
  • plastic grocery bags,
  • electronics,
  • grass clippings and yard waste including tree trimmings

For all the environmental conscience individuals who have suffered pains of guilt when throwing away large garbage bags twice a week, knowing that their trash will sit under mounds of dirt for decades slowly decaying, this is a good thing. The City and the Keep

Kennedale Beautiful Commission hopes most residents agree.

The curbside pickup will be provided by the current waste company, Progressive

Waste Solutions, and will last from approximately October 2014 to December 2014.

Waste Solutions for questions on the program at 817-222-2221.
