SDSU football?s Washington making a strong first impression

It may not be surprising that one of the more impressive players early in San Diego State football?s fall camp is a running back. {{more}}
 
It?s a little surprising that the player isn?t junior Donnel Pumphrey, senior Chase Price or sophomores Marcus Stamps and Rashaad Penny.
 
No, it?s freshman Juwan Washington from Kennedale, Texas, who routinely made defenders whiff during scrimmages Thursday.
 
?He?s got some quickness and natural feel for where the holes are,? head coach Rocky Long said.
 
One of Washington?s biggest fans is Pumphrey, who could be heard yelling ?easy money? as Washington scored a touchdown during a scrimmage.
 
However, Long doesn?t want to over-hype the freshman just yet.
 
?He?s making the other freshman out there miss, so that?s good,? Long said.
 
San Diego post the following about Juwan Washington:

Racked up big numbers at Kennedale High School, where he won

three varsity letters … Rushed for 5,139 yards and 75 touchdowns with an

average of 9.5 yards per carry during his career, according to MaxPreps …

Eclipsed the 300-yard mark five times in 24 games as a prep … Also combined

for 836 yards on kickoff returns … Earned second-team all-state honors after

running for 2,695 yards and 39 scores during his senior season, leading the

Wildcats to a 12-1 overall record and an appearance in the UIL Conference 4A

Regionals … Rated as a three-star recruit by Scout, 247sports and ESPN, and a

two-star recruit by Rivals … Earned a grade of 82 by 247sports and a 74 from

ESPN … Picked SDSU over other offers from Houston, Arkansas State,

Louisiana-Monroe and Texas State … Also received recruiting interest from

numerous other schools, including Arkansas, Baylor, Brigham Young, Duke, Kansas

State, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, TCU and USC, among others.
