Kennedale?s Detective Nathan Dancer boxes on the side not just for the challenge of it but also for the cause. The last two years he has participated in the Guns & Hoses North Texas Boxing Tournament. The boxing tournament features teams of firefighter and policemen, boxing in three one minute rounds and is sanctioned by the US Boxing Association. This is the 15th year for this friendly competition. The firefighters took away the title from the police officers who plan to take it back this year. Between four to five thousand fans attend the event.

Guns and Hoses is a 501(C)3 non-profit organization founded in 2002 for the purpose of assisting the families of fallen first responders who have lost their lives in the line of duty. To date, the organization has helped 35 different families with monetary support. The organization also dedicates a percentage of all proceeds to help fund community programs that are dedicated to working with underprivileged youth.
 
?The initial objective behind was to raise funds for the families of fallen police and firefighters,? said Dancer. He added, ?But they also pick a children?s charity on both the fire side and the police side to contribute and they invite those charities to the events and they present them a check at the event and it is a really cool thing for the Dallas and Tarrant county community. It kind of tugs at the heart strings to be there and for the people who are there can see that firefighters and police officers are real people with human hearts and that we really do care about people.?
 
have raised over $6,000 in 3 years …
 
Earlier this year Detective Dancer received the Ring of Honor for his participation and fundraising efforts. He credits his wife in helping him raise money. To date, he and his wife have raised more than $6,000 for the charity.
 
Dancer was the School Resource Officer for Kennedale Junior High for three years before earning a promotion to detective for KPD. He said that he has been into boxing for a long time and active in mixed marital arts training. He also has a black belt. So he is no novice to the boxing ring. This will be his third year to box in the Guns and Hoses Tournament and he called the experience amazing.

?This year should be a very emotional year with the loss the five Dallas officers and the three officers in Louisiana,? said Dancer. ?So when they ring the bell for the fallen firefighters and police officers, it is going to a long pause. It is why we would like to make this year a record turnout. I think this is what is needed as part of the healing process.?
 
This year the annual event is set for September 10 at the City of Allen Event Center, 200 E Stacy Rd, Allen, Texas beginning at 7pm. Doors open at 5:30 pm. You can purchase tickets by contacting Detective Dancer at 817-985-2166 or at [email protected].
