Coached for KHS’ Richard Barrett three years
The Cleburne Independent School District’s Board of Trustees announced Thursday night the unanimous approval of Casey Walraven as head football coach and boys athletic coordinator. {{more: READ MORE …}}
Walraven, who graduated from Alvarado High School in 1996, went 43-15 in his five seasons as head coach in Grandview as he led the Zebras to the postseason four times.
?First of all, he?s a Johnson County boy and he?s had success,? CISD Athletic Director Mark Walker said. ?He?s been a part of great programs with Kennedale and Grandview as an assistant and then as a head coach. We had some good candidates but with Coach Walraven it stuck out more than anything having someone that understands the culture and understands what we have here. He?s giving up a great program [in Grandview] that he?s built and spent a lot of time and energy in to come over here. We think it?s a great fit and we?re looking forward to working with him.?
The selection committee went through 53 applications and narrowed the search down to nine coaches to interview, which was ultimately narrowed to two finalists.
?At the end of the day, one coach stood out in particular, and that was Casey Walraven,? Cisd Superintendent Dr. Kyle Heath said.
Walraven, who played quarterback at Eastern New Mexico University before graduating from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2002, was an assistant coach at Kennedale for three years and then spent seven years as offensive coordinator under Aubrey Sims [another former Kennedale coach] in Grandview before taking over as the Zebras? head coach.
During his tenure as Grandview?s head coach, he was named the All-Johnson County coach of the year in 2012 and 2015. The Zebras averaged 48.9 points per game in Walraven?s explosive offense over five seasons.
