Wildcat Band Awarded 6th Straight UIL Sweepstakes Award

For the sixth year in a row, and ninth time over the past ten years, the Kennedale High School Wildcat Band has been awarded UIL?s highest award for band, the UIL Sweepstakes Award. {{more}}
 
On Thursday April 9th, the Concert Band, under the direction of DiMitri Higginbotham, and Symphonic Band, under the direction of Erol Oktay, both performed in the Region 7 UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest at Alvarado High School.
 
… combined with the Marching Band’s First Division Ratings …
 
Both ensembles received ?First Division Ratings? from the judges for their stage and sightreading performances. With these ratings, combined with the Marching Band?s ?First Division Rating? from October, this gives the band program the Sweepstakes Trophy.
 
The Symphonic Band?s program included: The Billboard March by John Klohr, Choreography by Robert Sheldon, and Undertow by John Mackey.
 
The Concert Band?s program included: Circus Days March by Karl King, In a Quiet Place by Bill Calhoun, and Joy Revisited by Frank Ticheli. The musical selection program for the Concert Band is significant in that the difficulty level of these pieces was very challenging for the younger of Kennedale?s two bands. With the student make up of this non-varsity group being mostly freshmen and sophomores, it is all the more impressive that the concert band was awarded the first division rating.
 
… to compete in the Buccaneer Classical Festival…
 
In early May, the Wildcat Band will be traveling to Corpus Christi to compete in the Buccaneer Classic Festival. While there, the band will enjoy the sights and attractions of the historic Texas Gulf coast community.
 
… springs concerts in May …
 
The KHS Wildcat Bands will conclude their 2015 concert season with their spring concerts in the KHS Performing Arts Center. The Jazz Band and Percussion Ensembles will perform on May 14th at 7:30pm. The Symphonic and Concert Bands will perform on Thursday May 21st at 7:30pm.
