Wildcat Marching Band take top award again

On Saturday October 17th in Glen Rose, the Kennedale High School Wildcat Marching Band concluded a very successful marching competition season by bringing home UIL?s top award for marching bands, the UIL First Division Trophy, for the 11th straight year. {{more}}

This is a non-state competition year for 4A schools but for Kennedale it was business as usual, earning top marks for a 4A band in the UIL contest and other local marching festivals.

Besides the UIL Glen Rose contest, the Wildcat Band performed at the Preview of Champions Marching Festival in Mansfield, the Parade of Champions Marching Festival in Midlothian and the Golden Triangle Classic in Denton.

At each festival , the Wildcats improved their performance against 5A and 6A schools while besting other 4A schools in each contest.

  • Preview of Champions – band 3rd in Class, drumline 1st in Class, color guard 2nd in class and in finals placed 10th as the only 4A to make finals.
  • Parade of Champions ? band 3rd in class, drumline 3rd in class/4th in finals and the band place 7th in finals as the only 4A band to make the finals
  • Golden Triangle Classic ? band 1st in music performance, drumline 3rd in class and the band finished 5th in the finals competing against 4A, 5A and 6A bands.
The KHS Drumline will continue their competition season with a final performance in the Lone Star Classic Drumline Contest to be held in Flower Mound, TX on Saturday, November 7th. At this contest hosted by Marcus HS, over eighty of the best drumlines in the state will compete for top honors.

The band?s 2015 production this year, performed at halftime of Wildcat football games and at contests, is entitled, ?Zero Gravity?, where the band takes the audience on a journey through outer space with large pictures of celestial scenes as backdrops behind the band during the show. The band?s drill design features spiral galaxies, shooting comets, and planets and stars. The original music for the show is adapted from composer Michael Markowski?s original concert band piece entitled ?Dreamland?. The marching band arrangement is by John M. Meehen (the same composer of the Wildcat Band?s UIL state finalist show from 2014) with percussion parts by Michael Huestis. The drill design for the show is by Jeffrey Barge.

The Band Directors for the Wildcat Band are Erol Oktay, DiMitri Higginbotham, Eleanor Macias, and Benjamin Brown. The Color Guard Choreographer and Instructor is Lacey McGowan. The student leadership for the band this season is: Head Drum Major ? Vicky Huggins, Assistant Drum Majors ? Anna Llamas and Ileana Gamillo, Color Guard Captain ? Alicia Dailey, Drumline Co-Captains ? Jillian Melbourne and Kendall Barnes. The Kennedale Band Booster President is Jimmie Johnson.
