Last week, the 2017 Kennedale Wildcats earned praise in their first test when they held their own and, in most cases outplayed the #2 or #3, depending on the poll, Waco La Vega Pirates Friday night in an scrimmage at Wildcat Stadium. {{more: Read more …}}

Kennedale Head Coach Richard Barrett errors on the side of caution 99% of the time when handing out praise publicly, but after Friday?s night scrimmage, he said, ?In a lot of respects, we did really, really well.?

surprised by the results …

That is high praise coming this early in the season but Barrett confessed that he was a little surprise about the scrimmage results.

?My question was, said Barrett, ?and I still trying to discern which is true, are they [La Vega] not nearly as good as they were last year or are we that much better? I have asked some of the players is it that or is little bit of both. The majority said that they thought it was probably a little of both.?

they handed it to us last year …

Barrett went on, ?For example, their defense of the front seven, five of them were returners from last year. They basically had their way with us last year, I mean they handed it to us. That wasn?t the case [Friday].

?In fact their coach even told me, ?Coach, you didn?t turn the ball over. You kept the ball away from us. You moved it. You made first downs.? Barrett added, ?And that is what we want to do. That is kind of our mo ? keep the ball away, make first downs, and keep moving the chains.?

I liked what I saw …

?Defensively, we had two breakdowns- a long run and a pass,” said Barrett. “Other than that, they did nothing and last year they torched us [on defense]. This, in spite the fact, that their quarterback was back and he is a three year starter. Plus, they have a really huge offensive line.?

?So all in all, I would say we did pretty well,? said Barrett. ?We did see some places that we got to improve, that?s for sure. But for the most part, I liked what I saw.”

About this week scrimmage against 5A Sherman ?

?We will see a little more this week when we go live quarters [against Sherman]. We went one live quarter [Friday], but this week he [their coach] wants to go four quarters but I don?t know if we are ready for that,? said Barrett.

?But Sherman will be a lot better than they were last year. In fact last year, we had planned on going three quarters and after two, he [their coach] said that they didn?t want anymore. They were done,? added Barrett, who doesn?t think that will be the case this year.

The Wildcats will be on the road for this week?s scrimmage, playing in Sherman Friday night. Sherman?s second year head coach who is said to be already making splash, has 14 returning starters and is expected to make the playoffs this year out of a tough 5A district. The Bobcats combine running and passing effectively.
