Wildcats take game one in bi-district playoff over Castleberry

The Kennedale Wildcat Baseball team, the third seed out of District 10-4A, is in the first round of the UIL 4A Baseball State Championship playoffs this week. The winner of this bi-district playoff series advances to the area round.?

Kennedale (9-16, 5-7), playing in District 10-4A this year, finished in third place behind Crandall (21-9, 10-2) and Sunnyvale (18-4, 9-3). The Castleberry Lions (12-13, 8-2) finished in 2nd place in District 9-4A behind Benbrook.

Game 2 is set for today at 4 p.m. at Castleberry (Camp Carter Fields). Game 3, if necessary, will follow 30 minutes later again at Castleberry. Note: This is one hour earlier than previously posted.?Directions

In other 10-4A playoff action, #2 seed Sunnyvale (#13 THSB state 4A poll) defeated District 9-4A 3rd seed Diamond Hill-Jarvis in two games to move on to area play. On Saturday, #1 seed Crandall (#12 THSB state 4A poll) is scheduled to play District 9-4A 4th seed Western Hill and #4 seed Carrollton Ranchview plays 1st seed Benbrook (#15 THSB state 4A poll).

This year has been a rough year for the Wildcats who returned only 3 starters. The Cats did beat FTW Arlington Heights,* Godley, and Sunnyvale.* Kennedale also came close in a number of games losing by one against Stephenville, Midlothian Heritage,* Sunnyvale* and Crandall* while tying Krum and FTW South Hills. All these teams finished in the top three in their district with winning records. Those with an asterisk were ranked in the top 25 in THSB polls at the end of the regular season.

Thursday, the Wildcats got 6 runs on five hits while allowing 2 runs on 8 hits. Blake Taylor earned the win going all 7 innings, striking out 8. Castleberry recorded no errors while Kennedale had one.

Castleberry broke the ice in the top of the 4th scoring 2 runs but Kennedale answered back in the bottom of the ending, scoring 4 and never looked back. Tyler Simmon and Jace Warren for Kennedale each had a triple. Simmons ended game with 2 RBIs just behind Marcus Tidwell who had 3 RBIs with 2 hits.

Tonight?s game has been moved up from 5 p.m. to 4 p.m. in hopes of outrunning the storms. Kennedale would like the magic to continue and take series with a two game sweep. Castleberry has other plans and will pitch their ace in game 2.
