The filing deadline for positions on the Kennedale City Council and the Kennedale ISD School Board is just a couple of days away on Friday, February 18 at 5 pm. All open positions have at least one person running, but some incumbents’ names are noticeably missing.
Kennedale City Council …
The city has three positions open, each for a 2-year term of office. Two incumbents are running for re-election, a third incumbent is switching positions. Only one is running unopposed.
The following are the positions up for elections and those who have signed up to run. Incumbents are identified by (I) following their name.
Kennedale Mayor:
- Jeff Nevarez
- Hollis Mathews
Council Place 2:
- Gary Mitchell (I)
Council Place 4:
- Linda Rhodes
- Austin Deganhart (I)
Linda Rhodes is the current mayor but wants to return to her former position on the Council in Place 4. Rhodes, who had been serving as Mayor, a position she assumed when the former mayor, Brian Johnson, resigned in July of 2021. She is running against Austin Deganhart who was appointed to fill the empty Place 4 seat when Rhodes became the Mayor by action of the city council.
Applications for a Place on the Ballot [Kennedale City Council] can be found at www.cityofkennedale.com/candidatepacket and must be filed with the City Secretary’s Office (in City Hall, 405 Municipal Drive, Kennedale, TX 76060). There is no filing fee.
Kennedale ISD School Board …
There are two school board places up for election this year. School board positions are for three-year terms. At this time there are no incumbents running for re-election.
The following are the positions up for elections and those who have signed up to run. Incumbents are identified by (I) following their name.
Place 4:
- Maria Cruz-Perez
Place 5:
- Esteban Cerda
The big news at this point is who is not on the list of candidates. The incumbent for Place 4 is John Clark who is currently serving as the board president. Clark served for 15 years on the Kennedale City Council as a council member and mayor before serving 2 terms on the Kennedale ISD School Board.
The Place 5 incumbent is Andrew Biscoe who is serving as the school board vice-president. Biscoe was elected in 2019.
Indications are that they are both planning to retire from the Board.
Application to run for a school board place can be downloaded from this KISD webpage or picked up at the KISD Adminstration Office located at 120 W. Kennedale Parkway in Kennedale. Phone (817) 563-8000.
