The Jaguars came into the year ranked #5 in 4A Division I while the Wildcats entered as #19 according to Texas Football. Heritage, playing in Region III, was 11-2 last year, capturing the? district title (5-0) and was a regional semifinalist last year, losing to Carthage 50-49.

The Heritage program has established itself as a regional power since bursting on the scene in 2016 with their first full schedule. They have an overall record of 34-5-0 with a playoff record of 6-3-0. Over the same period of time, Kennedale was 34-9 with a 9-3 playoff record.

Kennedale and Heritage have met three times ? twice in classic battles with Kennedale winning the first two matchups. In 2016 Kennedale won a squeaker 49-47 in the regional quarterfinals and then a year later a second game by the score of 45-43 in the regional semifinals. In that game Kennedale came from from one point down with 33 seconds left in the game. Last year, the Jaguars got a bit of revenge in a 35-7 win over Kennedale in regular season play and want to tie the series up this season.

Heritage returns 11 starters with 5 on offense and 6 on defense. Running a wing-T offense and based on last year stats, Heritage will mix the passing and running while favoring the pass. However, they are they are breaking in a new quarterback as is Kennedale.

Last week Heritage defeated an outmanned Gatesville team 63-19. Gatesville finished 3-7 last year and is not expected to improve much on that record this year. In the game, Heritage senior quarterback Cade Sumbler went 16 for 14, 242 yards and 2 TDs. The Jaguars ran for 244 yards and 6 TDs with the bulk of that coming from junior Cullen Stone who rushed for 167 yards on 16 carries and 4 TDs.

While Heritage was not really tested last week, Kennedale was with the loss to #10 Decatur 35-21. Kennedale?s youth has a lot of room in which to improve. This second game for the Wildcats game will up the learning curve sharply.
