Lady Kats start district play with back to back wins – play at home this week

While the KHS football team has gotten a week break before starting 6-3A district play, the KHS Volleyball team has already started with 2 wins. They play again tonight against Lake Worth at home.

The LadyKats (12-14, 2-0) started with Mineral Wells (4-15, 1-1) last Friday night, winning in 3; 25-19, 25-19, 25-17. Then Tuesday night, October 1, the Lady Kats defeated Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis in 3; 25-15, 25-9, 25-15. {{more}}

Kennedale has survived a grueling pre-district schedule playing mostly 4A and 5A teams. Their wins came against the likes of 4A Lake Dallas, 4A Crowley, 4A North Dallas, Southwest Christian, 4A Saginaw Chisholm Trail, 5A Lubbock, 4A Plainview, 4A Arlington Sequin, and 3A Carrollton Ranchview.

Coach Kelley Cargile said the schedule has taught the team some good things and one of the best things they could learn, togetherness. “They play together as a team,” she said. ?At the beginning of the season she describes the LadyKats as ?young and aggressive.? While that is still there, the pre-season has tempered the team with the roughness of the pre-district schedule.

Leading the team in kills is Rachel Dixon (Sr) with 135 followed by Maggie Pyles (So) with 118 and Darby Smith (So) with 96. Pyles and Dixon swap places in digs with Maggie leading with 122 and Rachel with 102 followed by Danielle Hedglin (Jr) with 88.

Dixon leads again in 20 solo blocks and 53 total blocks (blocks plus assists). Pyles has 8 and a total of 23. Senior Amberlee Cook also has 23 total blocks with 19 assist and 4 solo blocks. Not for behind is Jodi Dixon (Fr) with 17 total blocks and 12 assists.

Serving ace leaders are Darby Smith (20), Kylie Foster (24), Amberlee Cook (20), R Dixon (18) Pyles (17) and Jodi Dixon (14).

Next up for Kennedale is Lake Worth (9-10, 0-2) this Friday night at home with the varsity game scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Kennedale will play away next Tuesday at Castleberry (1-12, 0-1) before finishing the first round of district play against last year?s district champ, Springtown (20-8, 2-0).

Springtown has been in the upper tier of 3A volleyball for several years. The Lady Porcupines have been picked to repeat as district champs this year. For the Lady Kats, they represent the measuring stick.

It is very possible that Kennedale will show up on Springtown?s home court with a 4-0 district record. It will be youth vs. experience and tradition. That game will be played Friday, October 11 at 5 p.m. at Springtown.

This is the same night that the Kennedale Wildcats football team begins their defense of the district title playing Springtown there. Make it a double header and see the Lady Kats at 5p.m. and the Wildcats at 7:30 p.m.
