According to WalletHub, Texas is in the top ten in terms of severity in dealing with DUI. Texas ranks 7th in criminal penalties but 30th in prevention techniques used. {{more:Read more …}}
 
The minimal jail time for 1st time offenders is 3 days and 30 days for 2nd offenses. DUI is an automatic felony on the 3rd offense and there is no statute of limitations on the DUI. In other words 30 year old DUI convictions can still be figured in sentencing. Only five states have lifetime provisions.
 
Texas also allows administrative driver license suspensions for up to 90 days without seeing a judge but only four states require a judge?s ruling before suspensions. The number of days allowed for suspension of license varies from 30 days to 365 days (Georgia).
 
Still not convinced, consider these:
  • Texas has a mandatory ignition lock on 1st offense with a BAC of .08 for a period of up to one year.
  • The minimum fine on 1st DUI offense is $500 and $1000 on 2nd offense.
  • The average insurance premium increase in Texas after conviction is 100%, by far the greatest increase in the country.
