What is the election fuss all about?

For the average person who has a lot to keep up in their daily lives, the comings and goings at City Hall is of mild interest, if at all. Some, who may have tried to attend a meeting or two {{more: CONTINUE …}}in the past, were soon staying home and looking for something of more interest on television.

The meetings are usually dominated by zoning issues and other reports that seemingly had little to do with anyone but a few people or required much more background information and study to understand.

left squirming …

That was until the City Council took a move that left even some of their staunchest supporter squirming. They hit the pocketbook of most in Kennedale and not just by 5% or 10% but tripling (or more) water bills through a combine water and sewer rate increase. A normally passive citizenry is suddenly paying attention and that attention has grown into a political movement that has grown beyond the water rate issue.

one of the most anticipated …

The election this spring will be one of the most watched city elections in sometime. Often in city council election there are few if any contested positions. This year, of the three places that are up for election, all are contested by at least two candidates. One has drawn three candidates. Adding to the drama is that all three incumbents are running for re-election, giving a feel to the election that it is case of insiders vs outsiders.

As the campaigns roll out their slogans, yard signs and rallies, there seems to be three issues that are under discussion. Two are legitimate issues worth exploring the third is not and only drags Kennedale?s reputation needlessly through the mud.

issues …

Valid issue # 1 is the water/sewer rate increase. Valid issue #2 the rate and way develop is be done in Kennedale via the city of Kennedale and the Kennedale Economic Development Corporation. And, finally, the one invalid or non-issue in this election: corruption and power grabs by the city council members and city hall.

Those will be discussed later but for now there is an event coming up for voters to find out more about the candidates and their views.

candidate forum …

On April 13th, the Kennedale Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a candidate forum. The Chambers calls it ?an opportunity [for the candidates] to introduce themselves and answer questions about the issues.

The forum will be held at the Kennedale Performing Arts Center (PAC) on the campus of Kennedale High School, 901 Wildcat Way. It is schedule to run from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

The issues are important and it will be worth the time to attend.
