KHS was 1 of only 760 schools across the nation to receive this honor.

Kennedale High School was a recipient in January of the Female Diversity Award for AP Computer Science Principles. It was for the number of female students who were enrolled in the classes.

College Board research show that female students who take the AP computer class in high school are more than five times as likely to major in computer science in college.

Despite growing demand, women still only earn 18% of computer science bachelor’s degrees and make up a mere 28% of the science and engineering workforce, according to the National Girls Collaborative Project.

Schools receiving the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award have achieved either 50% or higher female exam taker representation in one of or both AP computer science courses, or a percentage of female computer science exam takers that meet or exceed that of the school’s female population.

The winners represent a broad range of high schools from across the country and around the world. They include private, public, and charter schools, large and small student bodies, rural and urban populations, and specialized high schools, along with generalized programs.

For 2021, there were 52 high schools across Texas that were honored for the Computer Science Principles award. Locally along with Kennedale High School were FtW Arlington Heights, FtW World Language Institute, Grapevine High, South Garland High, Frisco Lone Star, Dallas Harmony School, and Dallas Thomas Jefferson.
