hours and minutes are counted now …

Because of action by the State Legislature, the traditional ?school day? can now be looked at in terms of minutes. Students have a minumum set minutes that they must be attendance each year. This interpretation now allows schools more flexibility in planning their school day and their overall calendar. For example if a district had to make up snow days, they can extend their school day to add extra minutes as opposed to making up the lost day due to weather or schools might shorten their school year if they are exceeding minutes required.

semester ends before winter break …

For Kennedale, it means the first semester will end in December as oppose to January which allows students to take semester exams taken before the winter break and it adjust the school day for some campuses. The new calendar will still include a couple of make-up day for bad weather.

School will start as usual in the third week of August on Monday, August 22. Holidays in the first semester will be September 5, October 1 and November 21-15. And, in a departure from past calendars, the semester will end before the holidays in December on the 16th.

Classes will resume on January 3 for the second semester. Holidays include January 16 and February 20 (also designated as a make-up day), March 13-17, April 14 (also designated as a make-up day) and May 29. The classes for all schools will end on Friday, June 2nd.

a little longer day for elementary students …

Next year James Delaney Elementary and R.F. Patterson will attend school 30 minutes longer from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. At James Arthur Intermediate the length of day will remain the same but the daily schedule has been changed with the day beginning at 8:15 a.m. and ending at 3:45 p.m. Kennedale Junior High will remain the same (8:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.). Kennedale High School will start a few minutes earlier at 7:20 and end at 3 p.m.

The new calendar was reviewed and voted on by KISD staff, according to Superintendent Gary Dugger, before being presented to the school board for adoption.
