In the first 16 minutes, more than 160 responses to the earthquake came into the USGS, with people feeling the shakes in Arlington, Alvarado, Burleson, Grandview, Kennedale, Mansfield, Midlothian and Venus, as well as other cities.

Others in Ellis County reported houses shaking, lamps rattling and things falling from cabinets.

The last earthquake in the Ellis County area occurred Jan. 8, with a 2.7 magnitude earthquake, which came two days after Irving experienced two larger quakes, a 3.5 and 3.6, followed by about 10-12 small quakes or aftershocks.

Part of the county, including Midlothian, sits on the Balcones Fault Zone, an ancient set of faults or cracks in the earth’s crust, formed when the European and African tectonic plates collided with the North American plate, said Ken Morgan, director of the Texas Christian University Energy Institute and School of Geology, Energy and the Environment, in the previous article. The fault runs though Waco to Austin and San Antonio.

The earthquake is the strongest felt in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to date, according to multiple media outlets. No damage was reported, and most calls were just people wanting police to be aware of the situation, a Venus police dispatcher said. The rumble occurred at 5:58 p.m., 3 miles north-northwest from Venus, and 7 miles west of Midlothian.
